A DIN (Deutsches Institut fur Normung) connector is a standard electrical connector that was first released in the early 70s. It is used for several purposes for consumer electronics. It also comes with different model numbers. The DIN 41524 are designated for audio signals, while the DIN 41652 are used for computer data and videos. The DIN 41612, on the other hand, is designed for plug-in cards to be connected to computer motherboards.
These DIN connectors have two types; male and female. The male DIN connector has a plug on its end that connects with the female (socket). These sockets also have a variety of pins standard to their purpose. These pins have a 1.45 mm diameter and are spaced in different angles.
Compared to a DIN a connector, a mini DIN connector is a newer and smaller multi-pin circular connector. The number of pins in a mini DIN can go from three to five depending on its usage. However, the 7-pin connector is considered to be unique to the other models. It has a unique arrangement, is square in size, and has no other overlapping characteristics. It is used mostly in audio and video equipment.
Other common commercial connectors include:
4-pin Mini Din (S-Video) – This connector is for separate video and y/c for standard definition videos. It is used to supply video output signals. Back then, it was also used for Apple Desktop Bus to connect with keyboards and mice without other peripheral devices.
6-pin Mini Din (PS/2) – This pin is common to computer peripherals as well. It is used in IMB compatible keyboards and mice, as well as Acorn keyboards. However, with the release of USB ports, most new-gen computers do not use PS/2 anymore. Although, it has been considered a legacy port for its security and less restriction.
8-pin Mini Din – Popular tech company Apple and now defunct computer component supplier Sun Microsystems are the biggest users of this connector. They were largely used for their keyboards and mice. Apart from those, the 8-pin connector was also used in PC Engine video systems.
There are mini DIN connectors which are called non-standard as well. It includes the JVC Mini-DIN 8, 3-pin and 4-pin power connectors, microphone connectors from Beyerdynamic, and the Allen-Bradley Micrologix PLC DIN 8.
Applications of a DIN and Mini DIN Connector
Both the DIN connector and the mini DIN connector are used for standard analogue audio systems. For example, the 5-pin connector is used to connect a tape recorder to a stereo amplifier. Likewise, it is used for headset connectors for inbound and outbound audio drives.
Power supplies for personal computers use DIN and mini DIN as well. They are used to carry the power from the supply to the central processing unit itself. Theatre light controls use the same connectors too.
